At Seacraft Paints, we’re always excited to see our products put to the test in challenging environments.

Recently, we had the pleasure of being part of a unique project involving an underwater mapping vessel at Cordina Marine in Henderson. This vessel needed comprehensive protection against the harsh marine environment, both above and below the waterline.

The expert team at Cordina Marine, led by Joe, collaborated with Frank from Fixit Marine to handle the repainting process, ensuring meticulous attention to detail and quality workmanship.

Choosing the Right Products for Ultimate Protection

The goal was clear: create a robust water barrier capable of enduring prolonged immersion and exposure. The owners opted for a high-specification coating system that provides exceptional corrosion resistance and durability.

Here’s a breakdown of the coating system applied:

  • Jotamastic 90 Aluminium: One initial coat was applied directly onto the bare aluminium surface. Known for its surface tolerance and superior barrier protection, Jotamastic 90 Aluminium effectively guards against corrosion, making it ideal for harsh environments. • Jotamastic 90 Grey: Applied as a second coat over the aluminium layer to achieve a total Dry Film Thickness (DFT) of 300 microns, this step further reinforced the vessel’s resilience by forming a solid water barrier. Technical Data Sheet of Jotamastic 90 Grey

  • Penguard HB: An optional high-build coating layer was chosen for its excellent sanding properties. This intermediate coat ensures a smooth surface and optimises adhesion for the final finish. Technical Data Sheet of Penguard HB

  • Hardtop AX White: Finally, Hardtop AX was selected for the topcoat due to its balance of aesthetics and toughness. While offering a lower gloss level (80%) compared to the ultra-glossy alternatives, Hardtop AX delivers a silky, smooth finish that reduces sunlight reflection yet remains exceptionally easy to clean. Its high solids formulation ensures durability and longevity, even in challenging marine environments. Technical Data Sheet of Hardtop AX White

Below the waterline, Trilux 33 Antifoul by International was applied, providing the vessel with long-term protection against biofouling.

Results that Speak Volumes

The result? An underwater mapping vessel revitalised and equipped with a coating system built to endure years of rigorous service.

The collaboration between Cordina Marine and Fixit Marine showcases how top-tier products from Seacraft Paints can deliver extraordinary results, making vessels look brand new and substantially extending their service life.

Corrosion-related maintenance costs industries significant downtime and expenses every year. By selecting this robust coating system, the vessel’s owners have proactively protected their valuable asset, demonstrating a commitment to durability and efficiency.
